Fall Leaf Clean-Up
As seasons change, the fall foliage graces us with its presence. The contrast between colors red, orange and yellow can make a landscape look beautiful, but as the leaves fall they will take over every surface around your property. Then, it’s time to have the leaves removed so they do not smother your green lawns and healthy plants.

Fall is for Planting
Did you know that this is the ideal time for tree, shrub and bulb planting? Cool weather and less sunlight makes this time of year the best for root stabilization. The season allows the root system to focus on working itself into the soil and establishing better structure without the stress of maintaining foliage in the summer months. The additional root growth and structure allow it to better sustain harsher summer heat and drought. Trees and shrubs planted in the fall will need far less irrigation and can typically become established with the snow falls during January and February.
Bulbs should always be installed in the Fall. The best bulbs for our area are Tulips, Daffodil, Iris, Crocus, Hyacinth, Allium, Scilla & Blue Bells. If the soil is heavy clay, soil amendments will need to be added to improve drainage. With the correct soil and proper installation, these bulbs will flower year after year with little maintenance. November's Pick : Zinnia
This insect is called “Scale” because it resembles fish scales.
There are over 100 different species currently in Virginia! They come in different shapes and colors but the one thing they have in common is their size. This insect remains tiny. The two most common scales in VA are the San Jose scale and the Brown Soft scale.
The scale pierces the stem of the tree to feed on its sap while slowly reducing the plants energy. Depending on the plant, a scale infestation can be fatal.
The scale insect goes through two periods in its life. The unprotected and immature period where they haven’t grown a shell yet, and the protected period where they have grown a shell. The best time to treat the damage is when they are still in their immature period. The shell cannot be penetrated easily. But don’t lose faith just yet – if you see a ladybug in your garden welcome it. Ladybugs are scale’s natural predator.
Let us know if you have scale in your shrubs and we can help you out!
