Get your lawn BACK!!!

The Summer heat waves may have caused havoc to your lawn; let’s see how you can protect your investment! Now is the perfect time to turn it back around! How are you not going to lose that lawn “glow”? Consider aeration, over-seeding and topdressing!

We covered most of aeration and over-seeding in the previous newsletter, so let’s introduce top-dressing!

For Blue Sky Landscaping, September means preparation for top-dressing. But what is top-dressing and why do you need it? That’s what we are here to explain. Take a seat and get comfy because we are about to give you the top-dressing “scoop”.

Top dressing provides nutrients to the soil and should ideally be applied in early Fall. This will give grass time to germinated before it gets blasted with severe cold. For a successful top-dressing application – there are a few simple steps you have to follow:

  1. As mentioned in our August newsletter, aeration is needed. Removing plugs of soil from the ground leaves channels of air and in turn has room for water and top-dressing mixture to penetrate the surface.
  2. Using the top-dressing mixture, we work a few square feet at a time and mix 2-3 shovelfuls of the top-dressing mixture onto the lawn.
Using a flat tool, the mixture is spread into the grass working it into the aeration holes; keep flattening it out until the grass peaks through and the depth is even. Blue Sky Landscaping uses a highly calibrated top-dressing machine to do what the flat tool would do in this situation.
  3. At this time we are technically finished. You will need to water the area very well, or ideally we can apply the top dressing before a nice downpour (this will let the mixture settle for a couple of days). Please keep an eye on it in case any hollows or bumps develop. If they do, we will come back and flatten it out.
  4. Existing grass should be able to grow through the top-dressing as much as an inch.
